Some esoteric lore tells us that whales, particularly sperm whales, carry the soul records of the human family. That includes us and our ancestors. It’s an interesting proposition.
Whales are seafaring mammals whose ancestors once walked on land. But supported now by the water around them, is it easier for them to carry our collective soul records than it would be for us to carry them on our own? After all, our species still stands upright on the earth and in the air. No buoyancy to relieve the pull of gravity!
I’m sure whales do offer us our soul records. I don’t mean there’s anything like a notebook they stash between their dorsal fins and bodies. It’s just that communication really is possible between species. I mean, are you a dog person or a cat person? There’s some real vibe between you and at least one member of whichever is more your “tribe,” right?
Almost half my life ago, I was on a whale watch out near Stellwagen Banks, northeast of Gloucester MA. We saw a number of whales, near the boat, near the horizon; it was an extraordinary day. As the captain was about to head us back to shore, damp salty, sunburned, and happy, the guide with the binoculars gasped. She pointed at the creature surfacing not far away.
“A right whale! It’s a North Atlantic Right Whale!” she shouted, her awe apparent in every syllable. “There are only a few hundred of them left in the world.”
And I swear, that endangered Leviathan’s choice to breach just then, just there, just when we happened to be watching, filled me with such wonder and gratitude I’ve never been the same. That’s how I think they carry our soul records: they surface from the deep. If we’re present, not just nearby in a boat but really present, we might realize for the first time that we can go deep within and then surface again, too.
When we meet on their home turf, so to speak, I think whales’ comfort with great depth can be contagious enough to trigger comfort with great depth ourselves. Comfortable enough, perhaps, to find personal and ancestral wisdom within ourselves we never knew were there. So maybe they do carry our soul records for us, at least until we can begin to access them ourselves. What do you think?
I think YES!
